Current published deposit policy: the deposit is $1,000, nonrefundable, applied to the selected puppy and transferable to a future litter under the stated policy. Always read the current written agreement before sending funds; the signed agreement controls.

A good placement process is designed to answer two questions: is a Rhodesian Ridgeback a realistic fit for this household, and which available puppy has the best chance of thriving there? It should create clarity before money changes hands and preserve enough flexibility to match on temperament rather than color or a single photograph.

Step 1: initial inquiry

Begin with the practical facts: desired timing, household members, location, resident animals, fencing, work schedule and experience with large independent dogs. Share your goals honestly. A family companion, running partner, show prospect and multi-dog household may require different traits.

Step 2: application and lifestyle review

An application should not be a test with “perfect” answers. It gives the breeder a consistent picture of safety, expectations and fit. Useful topics include:

  • Daily schedule and expected time alone
  • Housing, fencing and exercise plan
  • Children and their dog experience
  • Resident pets and reproductive status
  • Training philosophy and class plans
  • Travel, pickup and veterinary arrangements
  • Breeding/show intentions, if any

Step 3: direct conversation

The conversation is reciprocal. Buyers should ask about health testing, the proposed parents, socialization, go-home care, registration, the contract and lifetime support. Breeders should discuss the breed’s independence, prey drive, size and management needs without minimizing them.

A responsible placement process balances family preferences, timing and puppy welfare.

Step 4: understand the deposit before paying

Our currently published pricing policy describes a $1,000 deposit that is applied to the puppy, is nonrefundable and may be transferred from one litter to the next when timing or the available match is not right. Confirm the following in the current written agreement:

  • Exact amount and accepted payment method
  • Whether the deposit reserves a place, a puppy or a selection order
  • Conditions for transfer to another litter
  • Any expiration or price-change terms
  • What happens if the breeder cannot provide a puppy
  • Remaining balance and due date

Do not send money solely because a social post says “available.” Verify the account, website and contract, and keep a receipt.

Step 5: breeder observation and puppy evaluation

Puppy behavior changes with age, fatigue and context. Matching should use repeated observations across weeks: approach to people, response to handling, play style, persistence, recovery after novelty, frustration tolerance and ability to settle. A formal assessment can add information, but it is a snapshot—not a guarantee of adult temperament.

Step 6: matching the puppy

Preferences such as sex, color and ridge markings can be considered after non-negotiable welfare and temperament needs. A breeder may recommend that a highly persistent, high-arousal puppy go to a more experienced household, while a steadier puppy with faster recovery may better suit a busy family. The goal is not to rank puppies from “best” to “worst”; it is to find the most compatible environment.

Step 7: final paperwork and pickup

Before pickup, review the final agreement, payment balance, puppy identification, health record, registration steps, food and routine. Confirm the go-home date and safe travel plan. Do not treat pickup day as the first time to read important terms.

Why transferability matters: if the timing or available puppy is not the right fit, moving to a later litter can be better than forcing a decision. Transfer terms must still be documented in the current agreement.

Frequently asked questions

Does a deposit guarantee a specific sex or color?

Only if the written agreement expressly says so. Litter size, sex ratio and individual suitability cannot be known in advance.

Can I choose only from photos?

Photos show appearance, not recovery, frustration tolerance or everyday behavior. Use breeder observations and a direct conversation.

Why might a breeder recommend a different puppy?

The breeder has observed the puppies in more contexts over more time. A recommendation should be explained with specific behavior, not a vague claim.
